Mechanism of Action
S. boulardii survives passage through stomach acid and works in the gut without permanently colonising it: in canine research it reached a steady state within about five days of daily dosing and cleared within about four days of stopping. There it competes with less friendly organisms for space and nutrients, supports the gut lining and mucosal immunity and contributes to normal fermentation. Reviews report its optimal growth temperature is 37 degrees, matching its host, where baking yeast prefers 30. The antibiotic point is biology rather than marketing: antibacterial drugs target bacteria and reviewed data show S. boulardii persists during antibiotic courses, which is why it is often chosen when a dog's normal gut bacteria are under pressure.
Evidence Summary
This ingredient carries the strongest evidence pack in the Petz Park probiotic. A 2018 double-blinded placebo-controlled study by D'Angelo and colleagues in Veterinary Record gave S. boulardii or placebo to dogs with chronic gut conditions alongside their veterinary treatment. The yeast group improved on clinical scores, stool frequency, stool consistency and body condition, with no adverse effects observed.
A 2022 randomised controlled trial by Meineri and colleagues in Veterinary Sciences supplemented 25 healthy kennel dogs and measured significantly lower faecal markers of gut inflammation and lower faecal cortisol in the treated group.
In humans the evidence is broader still: separate meta-analyses of randomised trials found S. boulardii reduced the risk of diarrhoea associated with antibiotic use. That specific finding is from human research and the canine equivalent has been tested with a mixed synbiotic rather than S. boulardii alone, so each claim here keeps its species label attached.

Safety and Considerations
S. boulardii was well tolerated in the canine trials, with no adverse effects observed. The recognised serious caution comes from human medicine: rare cases of yeast bloodstream infection have been reported almost entirely in severely immunocompromised or critically ill hospital patients. Apply the same caution to animals: do not give probiotic yeast to a severely immunocompromised dog without veterinary advice. Mild gut changes can occur when any probiotic is introduced; start at the labelled dose and see your vet if stools worsen rather than settle.
