Immune cells such as macrophages carry a receptor called dectin-1, identified in research published in Nature in 2001, which specifically recognises beta glucans. Binding it engages innate immune pathways, which is why beta glucans are described as immune modulators. Source determines structure: yeast cell walls provide beta-1,3/1,6-glucans, the form studied for immune signalling, while oats and barley provide beta-1,3/1,4-glucans, the form behind human cholesterol research and mushroom glucans differ again. Claims about one form do not transfer to another.
Evidence Summary
The receptor is established science: dectin-1 was identified as the immune system's beta glucan receptor in work published in Nature in 2001.
The canine evidence is a 2010 study in Clinical and Vaccine Immunology in which 15 beagles received oral yeast-derived beta-1,3/1,6-glucan. Antibody levels changed measurably during supplementation, with total IgM rising and total IgA falling and the changes reversed within a week of stopping.
Read that for what it is. It shows oral beta glucans reach the canine immune system and adjust its dials, temporarily. It does not show fewer infections, better vaccine responses or any health outcome and the direction of some changes does not fit a simple boosting story. That is why the claim here is immune modulation and nothing grander.

Safety and Considerations
Beta glucans are generally well tolerated. In the canine study no adverse effects were reported over the supplementation period and the immune changes reversed within a week of stopping. As with any new addition to the bowl, introduce it gradually and watch stools for the first week. Dogs on immunosuppressant medication or with immune-mediated conditions should only receive immune-active ingredients under veterinary guidance.
