Vitamin C and Vitamin E # Vitamin C and Vitamin E Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and Vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) are the primary water-soluble and fat-soluble antioxidant vitamins in mammalian biology. Both appear across multiple Petz Park formulas in doses specific to their target tissue. Unlike humans, dogs and cats can synthesise Vitamin C internally, though endogenous synthesis may be insufficient under conditions of high oxidative stress such as active joint inflammation or disease. Vitamin E is an essential dietary nutrient for both species. ## Mechanism of Action Vitamin C neutralises reactive oxygen species in aqueous biological environments, including synovial fluid around joints, the aqueous humour of the eye and the fluid surrounding connective tissue. Beyond antioxidant activity, it is an essential cofactor for prolyl and lysyl hydroxylase, the enzymes that cross-link collagen fibrils. This collagen synthesis role is directly relevant to cartilage integrity in joints and connective tissue repair throughout the body.
