# Taurine

Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid found in high concentrations in animal tissue. Unlike dogs and humans who can synthesise taurine from other amino acids, cats have a very limited ability to produce taurine internally and must obtain it through diet. This makes taurine an essential nutrient for cats specifically.

## Mechanism of Action

Taurine performs critical functions across multiple organ systems in cats. In the heart, taurine is one of the most abundant amino acids in cardiac muscle and is essential for normal myocardial contraction and calcium regulation. In the eye, taurine is concentrated in the retina where it protects photoreceptors from oxidative damage and is required for normal retinal function. In the digestive system, taurine is required for conjugation of bile salts, which are essential for fat digestion and absorption. It also plays roles in neurological function, antioxidant activity and reproductive health.

## Evidence Summary

The link between taurine deficiency and feline dilated cardiomyopathy is one of the most well-established findings in veterinary nutrition. In the 1980s, a large-scale outbreak of dilated cardiomyopathy in domestic cats was traced to taurine-deficient commercial diets. When dietary taurine was supplemented, cardiac function improved markedly and the epidemic resolved. This established a direct causal relationship between taurine deficiency and heart disease in cats. Studies by Pion et al (1987) published in Science established the link definitively and led to mandatory taurine supplementation in commercial cat food formulations. Retinal degeneration linked to taurine deficiency was established by Hayes et al (1975). The evidence is not mixed: taurine is an essential nutrient for cats and deficiency has serious, irreversible consequences.

## In Petz Park Products

Multivitamin for Cats: 25mg taurine per scoop alongside the full vitamin and mineral complex.

## Safety and Considerations

Taurine supplementation is safe for cats of all ages. There is no established upper safe limit for taurine in cats at typical supplemental doses. It is particularly important for cats fed home-prepared diets, raw diets or diets that have not been properly formulated to include taurine at adequate levels. Cats with chronic vomiting or malabsorption conditions may benefit from supplemental taurine even if consuming a commercially formulated diet.
