It is a yeast rather than a bacterium, it grows best at body temperature and it is one of the few probiotics tested in placebo-controlled trials in dogs. Its yeast biology also gives it one practical property no bacterial probiotic can offer: antibacterial antibiotics do not destroy it. ## Mechanism of Action S. boulardii survives passage through stomach acid and works in the gut without permanently colonising it: in canine research it reached a steady state within about five days of daily dosing and cleared within about four days of stopping.
