# Lutein and Astaxanthin

Lutein and Astaxanthin are carotenoid pigments with potent antioxidant properties. Both selectively accumulate in ocular tissue, particularly the retina and lens, making them specifically relevant to eye health supplementation in dogs and cats.

## Mechanism of Action

Lutein accumulates in the macula and lens of the eye where it functions as a biological filter against high-energy blue light and as an antioxidant against oxidative damage from light exposure. It reduces lipid peroxidation in retinal tissue and supports photoreceptor cell integrity. Astaxanthin is a keto-carotenoid with exceptionally high antioxidant potency, estimated to be significantly more potent than Vitamin E or standard carotenoids. It crosses the blood-retinal barrier and accumulates in the retina and lens where it provides protection against oxidative stress. It also has anti-inflammatory properties relevant to eye conditions involving chronic inflammation.

## Evidence Summary

Research in dogs specifically is limited. Lutein supplementation has been studied in dogs by Chew et al (2000, Journal of Nutrition) who found that lutein increased immune function parameters and serum lutein levels in dogs, demonstrating bioavailability. Eye-specific research in dogs using lutein is mostly in the form of observational and mechanistic studies rather than large RCTs. In humans, the AREDS2 trial (Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2) found that lutein and zeaxanthin supplementation reduced the risk of progression of age-related macular degeneration. Astaxanthin has strong human and animal model research supporting its role in retinal protection. The extrapolation to dogs and cats is based on shared ocular anatomy and the established mechanism of carotenoid accumulation in the eye.

## In Petz Park Products

Eye Support for Dogs: Lutein 4mg, Astaxanthin 4mg per scoop. Eye Support for Cats: Lutein 1mg, Astaxanthin 1mg per scoop (lower doses calibrated for feline body weight).

## Safety and Considerations

Lutein and Astaxanthin are considered safe for dogs and cats at supplemental doses. They have no known serious adverse effects. As fat-soluble carotenoids, they are best absorbed when given with a meal containing fat. The Fish Flavour in Petz Park Eye Support for Cats means the formula is suitable for cats with fish protein allergies as the flavouring does not contain fish protein.
