# Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo biloba is one of the oldest living tree species, native to China. Extracts of its leaves, standardised for active flavonoids and terpenoids, have been used medicinally for cognitive support and circulation for decades. It is one of the most widely studied herbal ingredients in the world.

## Mechanism of Action

Ginkgo biloba extract has two primary mechanisms relevant to brain health. First, it improves peripheral and cerebral blood flow by inhibiting platelet-activating factor and by producing vasodilatory effects in cerebral arteries, increasing oxygen and glucose delivery to brain tissue. Second, it has potent antioxidant activity through its flavonoid content, scavenging free radicals and reducing oxidative damage to neurons. Its terpenoid compounds, particularly ginkgolides, have anti-inflammatory properties and have been shown to reduce amyloid beta deposition in animal models of neurodegeneration.

## Evidence Summary

Ginkgo biloba has been studied extensively in humans for dementia and age-related cognitive decline. Evidence is mixed: some large trials show modest benefit, others show no significant effect versus placebo on dementia progression. The most consistent evidence is for early cognitive decline and vascular dementia. In dogs specifically, research is limited. Ginkgo biloba extract has been included in veterinary cognitive dysfunction management protocols and is used by veterinarians in senior dog management.
