# Bacillus Probiotic Strains

The Petz Park probiotic range uses spore-forming probiotic bacteria: Bacillus Subtilis, Bacillus Coagulans and the beneficial yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Boulardii. These are distinct from the Lactobacillus strains found in many conventional probiotic supplements and offer specific advantages in terms of stability and gut survival.

## Mechanism of Action

Spore-forming Bacillus strains produce protective endospores that survive manufacturing, storage, heat and the acidic environment of the stomach. They germinate and become metabolically active in the lower gastrointestinal tract where they are needed. Once active, they compete with pathogenic bacteria for resources and attachment sites, produce short-chain fatty acids that fuel the gut lining, modulate the gut-associated immune system and support mucosal barrier integrity. Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii is a non-pathogenic yeast with distinct mechanisms including binding to pathogenic bacteria and toxins, stimulating the production of secretory IgA and providing resistance to antibiotic-associated disruption. In practical terms, the spore form is what allows a dry powder to keep a stated CFU count on the shelf. A conventional Lactobacillus powder loses viable organisms steadily at room temperature, so the count printed on the pack and the count reaching the intestine can differ substantially. Bacillus endospores stay dormant until they meet the moisture, temperature and pH of the small intestine, which is why the dose delivered is closer to the dose declared.

## Evidence Summary

Bacillus coagulans has been studied in randomised controlled trials in dogs. A 2009 study published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine found that Bacillus coagulans supplementation shortened the duration of acute diarrhoea in dogs compared to placebo. Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii has strong human evidence for antibiotic-associated diarrhoea prevention and is widely used in veterinary practice for the same purpose. Evidence in cats is more limited but mechanistically the same strains are used. The spore-forming characteristic of Bacillus strains makes them more reliable in powder supplement form than conventional Lactobacillus strains, which have poor stability at room temperature. The prebiotic fraction in the same formulas matters to the outcome. Inulin and green banana fibre are fermentable substrates that feed both the supplemented strains and the resident population, and beta glucans act on gut-associated immune tissue rather than on the bacteria themselves. This is why the range is formulated as a synbiotic rather than a probiotic alone.

## In Petz Park Products

Probiotics for Dogs: Bacillus Subtilis, Bacillus Coagulans, Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Boulardii, Beta Glucans, Inulin, Green Banana Fibre. Probiotic for Cats: same strain complex, delivering 1.6 billion CFU per scoop. The dog and cat formulas are not interchangeable: the cat formula is fish flavoured and dosed for feline body weight, while the dog formula is beef flavoured. Both can be used alongside other Petz Park powders in the same meal.

## Safety and Considerations

Spore-forming Bacillus probiotics are considered safe for dogs and cats of all ages including puppies and kittens. They are well tolerated and can be used long-term. First-time users are advised to introduce the supplement gradually over several days to avoid a temporary adjustment period. Suitable for use during and after antibiotic treatment. When a course of antibiotics is prescribed, give the probiotic a few hours apart from the medication so the two are not in the gut at the same time. If loose stools persist beyond a few days, or if there is blood in the stool, weight loss, repeated vomiting or lethargy, see your veterinarian rather than continuing to supplement. Probiotics support digestive function; they do not diagnose or treat the underlying cause of chronic gastrointestinal disease.
