# Ascophyllum Nodosum (Norwegian Kelp)

Ascophyllum nodosum is a species of brown macroalgae (kelp) harvested from the North Atlantic, primarily from Norwegian and Canadian coastal waters. In veterinary dental health, it is the most evidence-supported dietary supplement ingredient available for plaque and tartar control in dogs and cats.

## Mechanism of Action

Ascophyllum nodosum works systemically rather than topically. After ingestion, bioactive compounds including polyphenols and fucoidan are absorbed through the digestive tract and excreted into saliva. These compounds inhibit the bacterial glucosyltransferase enzyme that facilitates plaque biofilm formation on tooth surfaces. The result is a reduction in bacterial adhesion and biofilm accumulation on teeth throughout the day. The compound also has anti-inflammatory properties that support gum health and helps soften existing plaque deposits over time.

## Evidence Summary

Ascophyllum nodosum has the strongest clinical evidence base of any dietary supplement used for pet dental health. A 2018 double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial published in [Frontiers in Veterinary Science](https://doi.org/10.3389/fvets.2018.00058) examined the effect of Ascophyllum nodosum powder in dogs over 90 days. The study found approximately 40 percent reduction in plaque deposition and 20 percent reduction in calculus formation (tartar) compared to placebo. The product tested in this trial holds a VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) Seal of Acceptance for plaque reduction, one of the most rigorous independent verifications available for pet dental products. The VOHC Seal requires that a product meet specific efficacy standards established by veterinary dental specialists.

## In Petz Park Products

Plaque Control for Dogs: 1,000mg per scoop. Plaque Control for Cats: 500mg per scoop (lower dose calibrated for feline body weight).

## Safety and Considerations

Ascophyllum nodosum contains natural iodine. It is not suitable for dogs or cats with thyroid disorders, as excess iodine can interfere with thyroid hormone regulation. Hyperthyroid cats, which are common in older cats, should not use Plaque Control for Cats. Confirm with a veterinarian before use in any animal with a known thyroid condition.
