# Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal is a processed carbon material with an exceptionally high surface area and porous structure created through high-temperature activation. It appears in the Petz Park Urinary and Kidney for Cats formula as an adsorptive support component. It is not present in the dog Urinary and Kidney formula. This page carries a critical safety note that applies to all cats on prescription medication.

## Mechanism of Action

Activated charcoal's mechanism is adsorption: substances bind to the extensive surface of the charcoal particles within the gastrointestinal tract rather than being absorbed into the bloodstream. In emergency toxicology, high doses of activated charcoal are used to adsorb ingested toxins before they can be absorbed. At the supplemental dose used in the Petz Park cat formula, the proposed benefit is reduction in the enteric reabsorption of uremic waste products. This mechanism, known as enteric or intestinal dialysis, is used in human renal medicine and is based on the principle that activated charcoal can bind nitrogen-containing waste compounds in the gut, reducing their reabsorption into the bloodstream. For cats with compromised kidney function, reducing the circulating load of uremic toxins has documented clinical relevance.

## Evidence Summary

Activated charcoal as an emergency toxin treatment has strong clinical evidence. Its use as a daily supplemental component for uremic toxin management is supported by the enteric dialysis concept. A study in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine by Trevisan dos Anjos et al examined activated charcoal supplementation in dogs with chronic kidney disease and found reduction in blood urea nitrogen and creatinine levels, supporting the mechanism. The doses used in the Petz Park formula are supplemental rather than therapeutic and the primary use case is as a supporting component alongside the urinary herbs and anti-adhesion agents in the formula.

## In Petz Park Products

Urinary and Kidney for Cats: present as part of the formula alongside Nettle Seed Extract, Marshmallow Root Extract, Dandelion Root Extract, Sodium Citrate Anhydrous, Cranberry Extract and D-Mannose. Not present in the dog Urinary and Kidney formula.

## Safety and Considerations

Critical: activated charcoal is non-selective in its adsorption. It will bind prescription medications if given at the same time, reducing their absorption and effectiveness. Cats on any prescription medication must receive Urinary and Kidney for Cats at least 3 hours apart from their medication. This is the most important safety consideration for this product. At the supplemental dose used and given correctly, activated charcoal is well tolerated in cats.
